Creature Guide

Humans - Humans are just like those found in our world.

Haunts - It is unknown exactly how the haunts came to be. Fortunately, they are exceptionally rare. Perhaps they are ancient creatures created by magic that should never have been cast. Perhaps they are remnants of a long-forgotten race, remaining to fulfill some purpose even they no longer remember. Haunts resemble skeletal, ethereal humans, though it’s not completely clear by looking at them if they have skeletons at all. They wear a flowing robe that covers their face, but it’s difficult to pin any color on their robes. They emit a dull glow. There aren’t many interactions with them, but they don’t seem to be universally evil.

Larghies - Larghies are cunning, untrustworthy, and sour. They hide in the nooks and crannies of the woods and mountains, striving to convince those around them that they are forthright and good. Sometimes they are, but more often they simply aren’t. They usually travel in large numbers for safety, and have been known to be capable tradesmen and merchants, when they are trusted enough to be so. They are fascinated by machines, and few can hide their greed for gold for very long. They can be a good source of anything, though they are seldom willing to easily give up what they have without a trade they feel favors them, and anything they possess was probably stolen from someone else. Larghies are short and wiry, with lumpy heads and droopy ears that hang off the back of their head like limp rabbit ears. Their eyes seem too large for their head. Their skin colors span the rainbow, though they usually fall somewhere in the orange, green, or purple colors, or an ugly brown. They are hairless, though some wear fake-looking wigs to look more charming. They try to wear clothes that make them unassuming, but their tastes tend to be silly and primitive.

Maranites - Maranites are reclusive and wise, building communities away from the humans. They tend to prefer books and magic over the affairs of humans, and their works of art are sublime. They are logical yet creative, and their pursuits tend to be ones of mental prowess. They enjoy fine things and will often use their intellect to achieve vast amounts of wealth. They are frequently great sources of gold, magic, and gems. Maranites are slender and stand a little shorter than humans. They are dark-skinned with hair of bright white, yellow, orange, blue, or any other vibrant color. Many will even wear headpieces made from silver or antler. Male maranites will sometimes grow out their facial hair, though both can be prone to sometimes extreme hairstyles as flamboyant as their colors. Many will also get brightly colored tattoos on their bodies (arms, legs, face, etc.). They wear fine clothes fit for nobility, even if they themselves aren’t nobles.

Merfolk - Merfolk include mermen and mermaids. They are loners, prone to wandering throughout the world’s oceans mostly by themselves, only sometimes congregating in one spot as a group for long. Merfolk are very strong and primitive, generally swimming throughout the oceans with what they can carry in a small bag around their shoulders and a weapon for their own protection. Merfolk are also renowned for their beauty, in many ways far more beautiful than humans could ever be. The men are strapping and the maids are slender yet possessing a strength that seems to exceed their bodily size. Their hair is any vibrant color, such as pink, purple, yellow, green, blue, orange, or red, and their fins are equally vibrant, though metallic-looking and scaly, usually a silver, gold, brass, or other similar metallic color. Merfolk love to collect shells for armor or attire, and usually have several. They are also highly magical.

Mites - Small, strong, tough, and cunning, these small folk look scary, and before now haven’t been seen by humans in decades. They stand only about two to three feet tall, with skin that is black that seems to gleam silver, purple, and blue in what little light hits them. They can see perfectly in complete darkness and anything more than dim light gives them a headache if they are exposed to it for long. They have faces that look to be made from rocky stalagmites, as the rest of their bodies seem to be as well. They wear dull, colorless loincloths that serve more function than fashion. Mites are about as likely to be kind as they are to be rude. They are survivors, and probably think of humans what humans think of them.

Muckducks - Spiteful and lazy, muckducks are brutish avian humanoids that flock together to pillage and raid coastal areas. They live in well-hidden coves believed to be in cliffs or shallow caves, and they are unfailingly aggressive when they have found prey. When they aren’t fighting, they are trying to swindle any who cross their paths, though they don’t tend to be particularly bright. Female muckducks have brown feathers, while males have feathers that are gray or brown, except their head which is usually bright green or purple. They are usually wearing makeshift armor made of scraps of materials they find in their raids, even made of non-clothing material sometimes.

Oryms - Oryms are ruddy, stubborn, gruff, and curmudgeonly. Prone to wandering and hailing from lands few humans have seen, these gentle yet coarse giants are self-sufficient and tough. They have been known to travel in groups or alone, and usually travel light. They don’t usually fuss over things that have no utility, but they love games and creating things with their hands. Machines and tools are prized possessions of any orym. You’d be unlikely to ever find an orym who would turn down a challenge to a wrestling match! They are usually great sources of gadgets and leather. Oryms are broad and tall (about seven to eight feet tall), with broad shoulders, sometimes overweight. They tend to be pale-skinned (almost white) with hair in the human spectrum of colors Each tribe has its own traditions of hair styling and grooming, such as dreadlocks with long beards or shaved bald with trimmed beards. They tend to wear leather or fur clothes, or at least woolens, as though they expect a blizzard at any moment, even in the peak of summer.

Quoxotlyl (or “Quoxies”) - Avian-humanoids who are not commonly seen as they dwell in the high mountains and fly throughout the region on their own, quoxotlyls, or “quoxies” as they are commonly called, are generally pleasant though arrogant, seemingly practicing a great deal of patience in speaking with humans. They are indeed very intelligent. They are good sources of feathers from various birds they raise, as well as sources of cloud that they harvest. Quoxies are vibrant-colored bird-people with two human-like, feather-covered arms, two raptor-like legs, and two large wings extending from their upper back. They have feathers covering their whole bodies except the lower parts of their legs. Their heads resemble those of falcons or hawks. Their feathers are usually brightly colored, and can be any in the rainbow and sometimes even a combination of colors, though sometimes they can be more dully colored brown, gray, white, or black. Quoxies are tall, generally standing about seven to eight feet tall, though they are almost always slender and lithe.

Squidheads - Sensitive and tough, squidheads--or so they are called by humans, their real name being gqwlgwlgrqqllthrwl--are a technologically advanced and highly religious race. They have two arms and two legs, though their brown or orange skin is squid-like and sometimes flecked with large, dark spots. Their head somewhat resembles an upturned squid. They have a face with eyes and a mouth, though they smell through olfactory sensors in their tentacles, which protrude from their head somewhat like hair. They tend to be broadly built, both male and female. They wear functional clothes made of seaweed and underwater fibers except during religious ceremonies or other ceremonies, at which point they are known to wear brightly dyed strip-robes.
